Troubleshooting guide

QR Code Stopped Working

If your QR code expired, stopped working, or needs to be reactivated, start here before replacing printed materials.

First: rule out a printing problem

A damaged or badly printed code can look like an expired QR code even when the redirect is healthy.

  1. Scan it with two different phones, with the phone held square-on and not too close.
  2. Check for cropping, glare, folds, smudges, or a missing quiet zone around the QR pattern.
  3. Make sure the code has enough contrast. Black on white is the safest test.
  4. If the QR opens but the page fails, copy the opened URL and test that destination directly.

Static vs dynamic

Static QR codes cannot expire

A static QR code stores the final destination inside the printed pattern. Once printed, no QR provider can switch that pattern off. If the destination website itself is still online, the QR should keep working.

Dynamic QR codes use a hosted redirect

A dynamic QR code usually points scanners to a short URL first. That short URL then redirects to your menu, PDF, booking page, image, video, vCard, social link, WiFi details, or app link. If that hosted redirect is paused, frozen, deleted, or blocked, scanners may see an expired-code message even though the printed pattern still scans.

Diagnose the provider redirect

If the printed pattern scans to a short URL you do not control, your current QR provider controls the redirect. HonestQR cannot reactivate another provider's redirect, but you can still avoid wasted print runs if you move carefully.

Provider notes

Before cancelling, open the account dashboard for the provider that owns the short URL, confirm whether editing still works, and save invoices or cancellation emails.

1

Make a replacement first

Create the new QR destination before touching billing. Use HonestQR for a dynamic replacement, or use a free static QR if the destination will never need to change.

2

Re-point if you still can

If the old dashboard still allows edits, point the old dynamic QR to your final URL, your own domain, or your new HonestQR short link. Scan the printed code after saving.

3

Reprint for a permanent fix

If the old provider disables its redirect after cancellation, the old printed QR may still stop. The durable fix is a new QR code whose redirect you control and have tested.

How HonestQR helps

Cancel anytime — your codes keep working. We never switch off your QR codes because you stopped paying.

Dynamic HonestQR codes can be edited after printing, and every dynamic code has a static fallback download. If you never pay us, you can still use the free static QR generator for destinations that do not need a hosted redirect.
